   PA-3015 - Ancient Roman Pottery - Two-Handled Wine Jug - c. 1st Cent BC - 1st Cent AD


PA-3015: (6 11/16 x 3 7/8 inches - 171 x 98 mm) Ancient Roman terracotta wine jug (amphora) wheel turned with applied handles and decorated with concentric rings on the body. Nicely shaped and in excellent condition with no cracks. The jug is footed and has a flared rim. The surface shows some encrustation from burial. A superior example of Roman provincial manufactured utility ware. For jugs with similar decoration see Hayes "Roman Pottery in the Royal Ontario Museum," Plates 108-110. Provenance: from a Massachusetts Private Collection.
