|Made for the 1900 presidential campaign of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, this horizontal format broadside is one of the most colorful and graphic of the era. Between facing portraits of the two men is a bold, five-color, patriotic image of a bald eagle perched amid six flags with crossed staffs. These are bound in such a way that they resemble an angel with outstretched wings or a pillar of fire.|
Below McKinley and Roosevelt are reproductions of their signatures, and along the bottom, in blue text, is maybe the best part, which is the full myriad of slogans for the campaign:
PROTECTION & PROSPERITY & NO LOWERING OF THE FLAG & RIGHT AND JUSTICE & HONEST MONEY & FULL DINNER PAILS & OUR COUNTRY & OUR HOMES
It is interesting to note how many of these concepts still resonate after the passing of more than 100 years.
It is also interesting to note that both of these men would soon hold our nation's highest office. President William McKinley, while only six months into this, his second term, was assassinated by Leon Frank Czolgosz while attending the Pan-American Exposition (World's Fair) in Buffalo, NY. Roosevelt assumed the presidency for the remainder of the term then won the 1904 election to serve an additional four years.
The poster is signed "Allied Printing, Chicago, Ill." and is marked "Trades Council, Union Label, 142". A trades council is an association of labor unions, so the poster was likely commissioned to be printed and distributed by chapter 142 (probably in Chicago, though exact location unknown) in support of the McKinley-Roosevelt ticket.
Mounting: This is a sandwich mount between 100% cotton velvet and u.v. protective plexiglas. The frame is our best, black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed, Italian molding.

||The poster was professionally removed from a background to which it had been adhered. There are areas that have some parchment loss on the reverse where the glue was the harshest, but the front is intact. There are light fold marks and the edges have minor wear. The broadside, however, has an outstanding presentation.|
